You tried all the things but your hair is still dry!!!
If you have ever experienced dry and brittle hair, you’re not alone.
This is what you should be asking yourself.
Are You Using the Right Products?
I understand that right products can be subjective… But in this case, I’m asking are you using water-based moisturizing products.
Water is the best moisturizer so of course using water-based products will be the best for moisturizing your natural hair.
If your hair is dry or has a high porosity, you’re doing yourself a favor by staying away from water insoluble products such a waxes, silicones, thick oils and butters. These things sit on top of the hair and make it very difficult for anything especially water to enter.
In the event that your products are not water-based, you will need to use a clarifying shampoo to fully remove product build-up and residue.
Here are some clarifying shampoos that I highly recommend for natural hair.
Clarifying Shampoos For Natural Hair
- Shea Moisture JBCO Strengthen & Grow Shampoo,
- Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo,
- Curls Pure Curls Clarifying Shampoo,
- Shea Moisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo

Is It Time For A Protein Treatment?
You should be incorporating a protein treatment into your natural hair regimen at least once a month. Hair is made up of mostly protein.
Since you naturally lose a small percentage of protein when you wash your hair, it’s important to replenish to add strength back to the hair.
Protein treatments work by filling in the gaps that are present on your hair strand, forming a bond.
A lack of protein can lead to breakage, so make sure to keep up with those monthly protein treatments.
Here are some protein deep conditioners or treatments that I highly recommend for natural hair.
Protein Deep Treatments or Deep Conditoners For Natural Hair
- ORS Hair Mayonnaise, Shea Moisture JBCO Strengthen, Grow, & Restore Treatment Masque,
- Giovanni – Smooth as Silk Xtreme Protein Hair Infusion,
- ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor
When’s the Last Time You Had A Trim?
As your hair gets longer, your ends experience wear and tear. This results in dry and unruly ends. The only solution is to remove those dead ends with a trim.
You will want to heat stretch the hair with a blow dryer and cut 1/4 to 1/2 cm above the split ends to fully remove the damage.
This will also ensure an even trim.
Is My Hair is Damaged?
There are a number of things that can damage your hair. It could be the sun’s rays, winter’s wind, or self-inflicted over processing; just too much heat from your favorite blow dryer/ flat iron.
Whatever the case maybe, your hair is dry, brittle, and DAMAGED.
It can take your hair weeks or even months to recover, but it is possible.
First, cease and desist the hair damaging behavior.
Then follow-up with a good trim and deep condition regularly with both a protein and moisturizing deep conditioner to repair weak and broken hair.
