Regardless of who you are, there are certain assumptions made when you decide to go for new short look or go natural by doing the big chop. Here’s a list of 5 things people think when you sport a twa or short hair.
You’re Crazy
Every woman that shaves her head is not having a Britney Spears moment (at least not every time).
When I did my first and only big chop and cut off all my hair, my mom (bless her heart) thought I was crazy. “No one in their right mind would cut off all that long and pretty hair,” she said. I was tired of propitiating the image of long-haired beauty. I explained it was about redefining my self-image. Needless to say, she was unconvinced.
Your Man Is Doing You Wrong
Some women do a big chop in response to a break up. I totally get it! Cutting your hair is very liberating. Cutting your hair can be a sign of rebellion towards that ex that only wanted women with long hair. It could also be a sign of adulthood; maybe your parent didn’t allow you to cut your hair. In either case, short hair is a badge of emancipation.
You’re Having A Mid-Life Crisis
The fact is when we, as women are going through something, our hair is the first thing to go. A new “˜do’ can change your whole outlook on life. Hair is also an easy target, because you can always (eventually) go back no change is permanent. When we want to change something about ourselves or life, we either dye it or cut it.
You’re Losing It (Your Hair, That Is)
Hair loss or alopecia is more common in both men and women than we think. In response to balding, someone might want to get ahead of it by shaving or cutting their hair before alopecia is apparent. (No pun intended)
You’re Sick
It’s unfortunate when someone cuts their hair that comments like “you look like a cancer patient” are made. It’s very sad, but a common assumption. Making the choice to cut your hair shouldn’t be equated to a life altering disease.
What were some the comment you got when you drastically changed your hair?

I had been transitioning for 4 years on and off always frustrated at the 2 textures and so I would always go back and just relax it. Well this last iteration I did the exact opposite. I looked at my half puff and half stringy shoulder length hair, and I thought it look a hot mess. II straddled the fence bc my natural friends insisted on me cutting it while the others were so against it and I just didn’t know what do. I had finally had enough and I drove right to some random salon, sat in the chair crying (literally) please cut it off..lol the whole shop looked at me crazy. Needless to say I did my BC 5 days ago. At first I hated my look; although, I have received so many compliments. Now I just have to figure how to manage it and products that work for me!
Awe no! I’m glad you’re enjoying your new look! Thank you so much for the advice! Just like you said it’s that strings hair that is driving me insane! It looks so ugly whenever I do my hair. I think I’ll do my BC once the cold weather passes over here in California 🙂
I did the big chop on December 13, 2014, Still not sure why I di it, but most of the comments are it’s always people with long pretty hair that cut it, why did you do that?
Hey ladies! I’ve been transitioning for about 11 and a half months now. Recently, I’ve been taking a P.E. class and shampooing my hair once a week with the Soultanicals “Honey I Shrunk the Frizz” shampoo bar (http://www.soultanicals.com/honey-i-shrunk-the-frizz-strand-poo-bar/) and deep conditioning with either Eden Body Works DC or ORS DC. The hair in the back of my head has suddenly began to break off (more of the relaxed part). Despite using my daily spritzer and doing the LOC method with my Oyin Handmade hairdew, Oyin Handmade Hemp conditioner and almond oil, my hair is still breaking off.
I have between 3.5-5 inches of new growth all over with a hair type mixture of 4a/4b.
Because of the breakage, I can’t decide if I should BC or not. I would love to BC towards the end of December, but I’m afraid that if I wait any longer, I won’t have any hair to BC!
I know that doing the BC is my decision alone, bu what are your thoughts on what I should do? And did any of you have this problem? I’m so lost!
Thank you!
thank yooooooooooou! gosh I have literally started thinking about going bald, i told my family about it and were like NO WAY! YOU’RE CRAZY!
I hate it. It’s almost as though you read my mind posting this ^_^
I really wish I could cut my hair….In time…
Lots of love to you and what you do!
