Hot oil treatments with oils and using oil-based products are important to keep locs from drying out. Coconut oil and Olive oil are great for hot oil treatments. Shea butter and cocoa butter based creams and products are great for re-twisting and maintaining locs.
Once locs have matured, conditioners are okay to use as long as they are rinsed out thoroughly.
As mentioned earlier, locs will hold onto a lot of unclean smells and grime, therefore its important to choose products that won’t sit in the hair and create more build up. Heavy creams, wax (bees wax), alcohol based gels and hair sprays should be avoided in the maintenance of locs. These products attract dirt and debris and are difficult to remove from the hair.
“In my next post I will discuss the different loc’ing techniques for starting and maintaining locs. I will provide a description, pros and cons of palm rolling/twisting method and interlocking.”
