Pre-poo: What is it?
Pre-poo (or pre-shampoo treatment) is when you saturates hair (dry) by applying a moisturizer, oil, hair butter, or a combination of them all and/or other beneficial foods like avocados and honey.
Do you have dry scalp? Pre-pooing is the perfect way to soothe the driest scalp. Read more here
READ: Benefits of Using Coconut Oil Before Shampooing as Pre-Poo Treatment
With growing popularity, companies such as Kerastase, Burt’s Bees, Phyto, and many others are developing their own pre-shampoo treatments. Deep conditioning hair prior to shampooing is also a way to pre-poo.
Pre-poo: Benefits
By reinforcing hair with natural oils and conditioners during pre-shampoo treatments, you improve manageability, softening hair which is a benefit from the restored moisture supplied by the treatment. The extra moisture and manageability aids in detangling, which in turn reduces breakage. The use of pre-poos help avoid “squeaky” clean hair that can cause dry, brittle hair and excessive split ends.
Pre-poo: How Do You Do It?
Developing a pre-poo that best fits your hair texture and type can take some research. But, start with inexpensive ingredients such as avocados or honey mixed with oil, or a conditioner that was considered less than favorable and adding honey and oil to it.
Coconut oil by itself can do wonders and prevent hydgral fatigue. Try my favorite mixture of Coconut & Olive Oil.
Also, regular mayonnaise can be used as well by mixing with your favorite conditioner, or oil as a stand alone will work as well. In the past, I’ve purchased a butter that may have melted and/or lost its original state of solidity. In this case, I’d use it as a pre-poo for clients who have non-porous, coarse textured hair.
Directions: Once pre-poo has been applied, this would be a great time to detangle the hair (if using a product that supplies slip). To maximize benefits, sit under dryer for approximately 15-20 minutes. If a dryer isn’t easily accessible, apply either the night before wash day or up to an hour before shampooing. Once applied, cover hair with a plastic processing cap, and wrap with a warm towel. When time has elapsed, rinse and proceed with cleansing regimen.
Utilizing a pre-poo prior to shampooing yields many benefits, including assisting in length retention and overall health maintenance of the hair. If not already, it would be a great addition to your hair care regimen. Enjoy!
I tried this with my daughter and her hair was so soft and easy to detangle. One question after the shampoo should I do a rinse out conditioner or just apply leave in?. Also during the pre-poo can I do a steam treatment or should I do that after the shampoo. Thank you
I love pre poo but I feel like it’s too much work
