Passion Twists: How I Did Mine and What Natural Hair Products I Used

Over the last few months, I’ve spent most of my time in protective styles these days. Learned how to do box braids, faux locs, passion twists and 2 strand twists at home has been my pandemic hobby.
With extremely dry scalp, there are a few things I do to prep my hair and scalp.
I also keep on deck a few products to cleanse and condition my scalp to keep flakes at a minimum. You’ll find them below.
One thing I highly recommend if you’re going to keep your hair in a protective style longer than a month especially braids is shampooing and conditioning your scalp and hair.
Here’s How You Shampoo Your Braids
I’ll use dry shampoo or a rinse-less cleanser between shampoos. I’ve listed my favorites below.
Here’s how to Prep Your Hair For Protective Styles. Before we dive in, I have a post on a few reasons to protective style that you can check out here.
Quick Tip: How To Grow Longer Hair
I also want to acknowledge that protective styles are not necessary for going longer or healthier hair; it’s more important that you minimize handling and manipulating your hair. Low manipulation is the key to healthier hair.

4 Things You Should Do Before Passion Twists
Before you install any protective style, you should give both your hair and scalp extra care.
This means clarifying, moisturizing, and deep conditioning every time. This will not only ensure that your scalp is thoroughly cleaned but remove any product build-up or residue that could potential cause your follicles to be blocked and inflamed.
This only can assist in preventing alopecia, hair loss, and breakage, especially around your hairline. Edges can experience product build-up from hair and facial products and your make-up. This is one of the reasons why it’s the initial site of breakages and breakouts.
Before you installing Passion Twist do the following to prevent breakage, excess shedding, and minimize scalp irritation.
- Rinse The Synthetic Hair
Most braid, crochet, and twist hair are synthetic and coated with an alkaline coating that can irritate your scalp. I use White Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar to stop synthetic hair from being itchy. Soaking the hair in water and vinegar can remove the coat.
This is a fairly simple process. I take the hair out of the pack, leaving the rubber band on it, run cold water either in the tub or a bucket, and add about a cup or two of white or apple cider vinegar to the water. I gently place the packs of hair in the water for about an hour. Then I let it dry. It’s important that you don’t frizz the hair. Be careful making sure it keeps its shape. - Shampoo with a Clarifying Shampoo
You should clarify your hair with a clarifying shampoo every 6 weeks or so; more frequently if you use heavy butters and oils like shea butter or castor oil. Regular shampoos may not be enough to degrease the hair and scalp if those are used.
If your products stop working after a period of time, this is why. Your hair needs a clarifying treatment. You can use natural clarify treatments but in the case of protective styling shampooing with a clarifying shampoo like Kinky-Curly Come Clean or Eden BodyWorks Peppermint Clarifying Shampoo are easy and time efficient especially when your hairstyle install can take up to 4 hours or more.
Follow up with a moisturizing shampoo of your choice. Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo is one of my favorites.

Deep conditioning natural hair is important. It’s the process of fortifying the hair with moisture or protein. From time to time, your hair might feel dry and brittle. You might also experience excessive breakage or splitting along the hair shaft. These things can be an indication that a deep conditioning treatment is needed. Usually, at this point, you can use a deep conditioning treatment to retroactively remedy those problems. Some people deep condition as part of their regular hair routine.
Personally, I deep condition as a preventative measure this is especially true for protective styling.
I like to do a quick deep conditioning treatment with ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor and African’s Best Hair Mayonnaise

My Passion Twists: How I Did Them & What Products I Used
I used 4 packets of Freestress Water Wave 22 in. Color: TT30. Then, I did the rubber band method which is easier and quicker for me to work with because of the length and fullness of my hair. It took me about an hour to part and rubber the sections.
After I parted and sectioned my blow-dried hair into rubber bands, I used a crochet latch hook to pull the extension hair under the rubber bands. When the hair was even in length, I split my hair into two pieces and then 2 strand twisted as normal with some Let’s Jam Extra Hold Condition & Shine Gel.
I repeated this process until my hair was completely done. I took about 8 hours total including shampoo, conditioning, blow-drying, parting, and twisting. 6 hours to 2 strand twist the passion twists into my hair.
