As a natural stylist, I have seen the tears all too often of a woman who has transitioned for a year – more or less, went through the ups and downs of the two texture struggle; only to finally big chop… and….. they aren’t in love with what they see in the mirror. They’re unimpressed and maybe even frightened by their own curl pattern and texture. “So what now?” Is usually the next question.
So what happens now?
THE ACCEPTANCE. One thing I like to tell my clients is to accept the kink. Accept the fact that there are multiple textures. And most importantly, accept what God gave you. Everyone’s texture and curl pattern is different, but equally gorgeous.
THE KNOW. Once you’ve ventured completely into natural, you have to learn your hair. Know what it likes and dislikes because when you do, your hair will thank you! Your hair’s likes and dislikes contributes to the overall health of it, and it’s appearance. Every texture responds differently to certain products, so once you’ve assessed it, researching should began. Knowing what it can and cannot do as it pertains to styling will also help your hair remain healthy and supple. There’s nothing worse than trying to force your strands to do what they don’t do naturally.
THE HOW. Patience is a virtue when it comes to natural hair. It’s like learning to ride a bike; you may not get it on the first try, and you may cry a little (lol), but you will eventually get the hang of it. Trial and error teaches a lot, but it’s also okay to utilize the videos and tutorials that are so freely available. But BEWARE when watching, that you follow those who hair closely resembles your own (this too cuts down on frustration). It’s also recommended to go into a local KNOWLEDGEABLE salon for a consultation.
This should tell you:
A. What hair type and texture you have.
B. What products would work best.
C. A regimen that best fits your texture that includes daily, weekly, bi weekly, and monthly at home care instructions.
D. And styling preferences and best fit options. We also have tons of natural hairstyle tutorials here.
Receiving a consultation will cut down on spending hundreds of dollars on products while you seek out one that works perfectly, and give you a solid fundamental foundation to start you on your journey.
THE JOURNEY. Life isn’t over when you unearth your natural crown and you’re blessed with something other than what you had in mind. It’s quite the contrary, the journey has just began for you to take your beautiful mane and make it your own. Enjoy the journey’s obstacles and be fierce! And if you need some inspiration here are stories from ladies like yourself.
