Janelle Monáe aka the Electric Lady sat down with Vibe Vixen to talk about everything from a rap album to having a baby. I’m so excited that Janelle Monáe is coming to my hood (Houston, TX) just in time for my birthday!!! I hope to at least meet her and get a picture. *fingers crossed*
Janelle Monáe’s fourth album Electric Lady hits stores September 10th. What can we expect from this album; electric heavy-hitters, including Prince, Esperanza Spalding, Miquel, and Solange, and delves further into the exploits of Cindi Mayweather, the android heroine of her first EP Metropolis.
What you may not know about Monáe is where her hustle comes from. She spoke of her admiration for uniforms and parents very briefly at Black Girls Rock. She original stepped out on the scene with her self-produced demo: The Audition (which I love btw).
Janelle comes from a working-class family that was backboned by her grandmother, a former Mississippi sharecropper and a mother who worked as a janitor. Her father was a garbage truck driver who struggled with drug addiction, and after years of seeing its negative effects, Janelle moved to Atlanta where she self-produced her demo, Janelle Monáe: The Audition.
