With all you do to keep your natural hair looking its best, hot oil treatments may seem like something you can do without. But as temps get cooler, this may be something you’ll want to include in your regimen! Here are four reasons why hot oil treatments are a good idea.
Protect scalp from issues such as dryness and dandruff.
Penetrating oils like coconut and olive oils keep your scalp supple and moist. As a bonus, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. As a bonus, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Oils like tea tree and rosemary provide anti-fungal benefits and will further help keep scalp conditions at bay.
Help transform dry, brittle hair to moisturized, soft hair.
As we know, textured hair is prone to dryness so any help we can get in that area is welcome! Heat will allow your oils to work more effectively by helping the hair absorb the oils. Using oils that contain protein building vitamins like coconut oil’s vitamin E can also help restore strength to your hair.
As it gets colder out, the lack of moisture in the air can dry out our hair. Weekly or bi-weekly hot oil treatments can fix that by adding some much needed moisture to your strands. This is key because hair that is well conditioned or moisturized is less prone to breakage. Less breakage means you’ll retain more of what you grow and you’ll actually begin to see progress in length, if that’s your goal.
Restore shine to normally dull-looking hair.
Sure, kinkier textures often lack the luster of looser and straight textures due to the way our hair reflects light but there are other reasons why you may crave a shinier look. If you have dyed your hair or use heat often, it can begin to wear on your strands and leave it looking lifeless and drab. When those heated oils penetrate and moisturize your hair from within, the effects will begin to show on the outside leaving your kinks and color-treated hair looking supple with amazing shine!
Reduce tangles making hair more manageable.
This is pretty self-explanatory. You’ll be able to glide your combs and detangling brushes through your mane much easier once you give your hair some TLC in the form of hot oil treatments. If your hair is more manageable, it’ll break less which, again, aids in you keeping the hair you grow!
How to Do ‘Em
Hot oil treatments are simple:
Once you have your oil(s) in an applicator bottle, place the bottle in a bowl of hot water to heat it up. Apply the oil from root to tip. Massage into the hair and scalp and place a plastic cap over your hair. Wrap a towel around your head for extra heat or sit under a hooded dryer for about 20-30 minutes. Take it a step further by sitting under a steamer if you have one. The steam will open up the hair cuticles to help those oils penetrate and the steam adds to the moisture factor!
