There’s a lot of misinformation out there about growing hair. I wanted to take the time as a hair care professional to address some of the most common that I hear in my salon.
If you feel like your hair isn’t growing, you’re not alone. You may want to read this first, 7 Reasons Your Hair Doesn’t Look Like Its Growing.
Myth #1: (Hair) Vitamins grow your hair faster.
Possibly one of the top selling advocates/products for faster hair growth is hair vitamins. But, do they work? Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to speed up natural hair growth. It has been determined that normal hair growth (at its healthiest) is between 1/4 to 1/2 an inch a month.
We talked about this in great detail and even got advice from Sister Scientist about this wide spread myth. Read: Do hair vitamins make your hair grow faster
Most hair vitamins promote healthy hair growth by supplying the key nutrients and minerals that most lack in their day to day diet. With proper levels of protein, omega 3, omega 6, and vitamins A, D, E, and K, it’s possible to grow hair stronger, minimizing chances of breakage, in turn retaining length.
Hair vitamins containing MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) or organic sulfur and biotin, prolongs the anagen or growth phase. This will leave hair feeling thicker, healthier and when cared for properly, cause hair to grow longer. But, it doesn’t speed up the growth of hair.

Myth #2 Trimming leads to faster hair growth.
Unfortunately, trimming doesn’t have any direct effects on the growth of hair from the scalp. BUT! It does help maintain and retain length by keeping ends from splitting. If you don’t trim often, and your hair is prone to splitting, then it causes the hair to “unravel” from the ends, leading to breakage, as it grows out of the scalp. This will cause hair to appear stunted, as if it isn’t growing at all. So regular trimming, only helps retain length, but doesn’t directly increase the speed of growth.

Myth #3: All-Natural hair products help increase growth
Though definitely healthier, by reducing amount of chemicals and cancer causing carcinogens, it does not determine or contribute to faster hair growth. Many of the all-natural hair product lines have abstained from the use of cancer causing carcinogens such as cocamide diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine, phthalates, parabens, fragrance **(can be a euphemism for approximately 4,000 chemicals), sodium lauryl sulfate and so many more, not because it aids in faster growth, but it contributes to overall health.
Myth #4: Implementing regular exercise regimens and eating a healthy-balanced diet can lead to faster hair growth.
Though we’d love to believe this is true, it is not. A regular exercise regimen and a balanced diet contribute to healthier, shinier, stronger hair. It will provide an outlet of stress, keeping hair from shedding as a result of stress overload. Also, it will supply hair with key nutrients that allows hair to grow at its optimum rate, while assuring hair is in good health. But, it doesn’t speed up growth, but in turn, promotes thickness, improves elasticity and balances protein, which can give an illusion of faster growth because you now are retaining length due to balanced health.

Myth #5: Scalp massages makes your hair grow faster and longer.
As stated before, nothing can speed up hair growth, there are definitely tricks to ensure growth. Scalp massage is definitely one way to stimulate the blood flow to the scalp, aiding in healthy hair growth.
There are many exaggerated tales about rapid hair growth and speeding up our genetic predisposition but the truth is, in order to grow healthy, luscious hair, we must be patient and care for our hair as best as possible. Knowing that growth of hair is genetically predetermined, and sometimes altered by health/hormonal conditions, you can only utilize ways that will ensure maximum growth potential. Also, by implementing a regimen developed to best cater to your hair’s porosity, hair type and texture, you will increase chances of achieving maximum length. When it boils down to it, it’s best not to be overly concerned with the idea of long hair, but instead strive for healthy hair.
