Locs are one of the most beautiful low maintenance natural hairstyles out there. However, you may not want the commitment of this semi-permanent hairstyle, so there is another option and no….it’s not loc extensions!
Faux locs can be achieved with stretched finger coils (see second video). Which isn’t too hard to believe that, finger coils are one way to start locs. Finger Coils are also a cute way to protective style the smallest TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro). Joyce Luck shows how this can be achieved in her tutorial below:

How To: Finger Coils
Steps for Recreating this Style
1. You must first start off by having freshly finger coiled hair. Finger coils are relatively simple to do and great for those who haven’t yet mastered the skill of braiding or twisting just yet. All it takes is some moisture, a product that will give you a nice hold, and a twirl of your finger. If you’re going to use a gel for your hold I recommend using Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Gel as it gives you the hold that you need without being drying to the hair. To see how finger coiling works, I have posted Joyce’s video below.
2. After wearing your coils for a day or two, you can begin the process of stretching those coils out. The first time you stretch your hair, put your coils in medium to large sized sections of two strand twists before you go to bed at night. You will wake up to more stretched out coils.
3. Stretch out your twists some more by dutch braiding or putting your hair in 2 large crown styled braids throughout the week before you go to bed. This will extend the coils out even further, and will give them the appearance of a dreadie style.
Finger coils are a really beautiful style that are great at keeping your hair tangle free, but part of the reason why I wasn’t so fond of them at times was because of how shrunken they can make your hair look. So, now if you love the look of finger coils like I do you have the option of achieving a more full stretched out look using a simple technique. While it can take can some time to complete this style especially if you want small coils it is generally an easy style to do. Get the look of dreads easily with no commitment or extensions required.
