Naturally I’m a fearful person. But I don’t think you would know it from meeting me in person. I’m pretty outgoing and comfortable with myself. This is only because I have vowed to defeat fear on a daily basis. Sometimes I’m victorious other time not so much.
One thing I have learned about fear is its really like the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ huffing and puffing. Really selling ‘wolf tickets’. Once you have built a fear resilient interior of courage and self-acceptance, fear can no long blow down that ‘straw’ facade of insecurities. We have gotten really good about hiding our fears instead of facing them head on.
Don’t get me wrong our fears are very real but they are exacerbate and exaggerated in our minds especially if we don’t talk about them. I think its impossible to truly reach your full potential or be fully productive without fear resilience I wanted to share some of my tips.
Tips for Facing Fear or Developing Fear Resilience
Letting yourself off the hook. Fear is a natural emotion. It doesn’t matter whether or not its rational. Most emotional aren’t point blank period. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re scared. Its best to love yourself fears (imperfections) and all. Self-love is crucial to developing courage.
Name your fear. What is it that you’re afraid of? Where is this fear coming from? Some of the most common fears are fear of rejection, failure/imperfection or other’s opinion. Many times its a combination of those three.
I’ll give you an example, I have been so afraid to start a Youtube channel. I realized it was because I was afraid it wouldn’t be perfect. Striving for perfection has been one of my downfalls in the past. It has made procrastination and completely miss out on opportunities. Or I wouldn’t even show up. I wouldn’t even try because I was so afraid of failing.
In this particularly case I took as much time as I need to learn and feel comfortable with Youtube terms of service, editing and producing quality videos. This didn’t happen over night. I studied, practiced and recorded video for almost a year before I posted a video. I’ve completed 4 or 5 that I’M happy with. I know they aren’t perfect but that’s the perfectionist in me speaking. But I understand that with time and practice maybe one day my videos maybe perfect in my eyes. (I’m trying not to sip my own haterade. I’m working own it.)
Plan of Action for Facing That Fear
Once you know what and why you’re afraid its easy to determine how you would like to overcome that fear. From my pervious example, I want to know how to produce the videos that I could be proved of and stand by regardless my perfectionist or my critics. Once I was able to do that I was good. But just because your overcome or face one particular fear doesn’t mean you won’t meet that fear again…
