The Today Show aired “60-Second Summer Hairstyles” segment on Aug. 3rd. Deepica Mutyala is the beauty expert who “styled” model, Malyia M’s textured hair into side ponytail thing. I believe we can all agree. We’re not exactly sure what to call the style. It’s been circulating the web and people are demanding answers.
Someone I really respect in the beauty space, Nicole Melton of Melton Digital, former Beauty Editor of Essence Magazine had this to say and is soliciting feedback. Feel free to leave your responses in the comment section below.
You may remember Deepica from when she first burst onto the beauty scene last year. Her YouTube video on how to conceal dark circles using red lipstick under her eyes went viral. To date, that video has nearly 10 million views. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Two months after her video went viral, Deepica quit her day job as a senior brand manager for Birchbox. She now works on her YouTube channel full time and serves as a beauty expert for broadcast & editorial outlets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But although Deepica m has an impressive beauty background and created a thriving career with the help of her YouTube channel, it’s clear that she is not a hairstylist well versed in afro-textured hair. ⠀
Are we too quick to label some YouTube stars as “beauty experts” without them having the credentials to back it up? Or, do we blame Today Show for clearly not realizing—or not acknowledging— that all hair textures are not one and the same. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d love to hear from any beauty bloggers or YouTubers on how you would have handled this situation. I’d also love to hear from any licensed hairstylists on how you view the rise of YouTube personalities, who although they can be very talented, often lack formal training to style all hair types and textures.
