1. How long?
I have been natural since September 2006.
2.Why and how?
My hair never took to relaxers. It’s always been very
course and thick. I sweat a lot. After getting a relaxer, my
hair would shrivel back up after the 1st wash. And I got
sick of micros, twists, fake ponytails, tracks, glues,
spritz, and wasting a day in the salon.
3.Transition or big chop?
You could say I did both. I wore my hair in micros and
twists for a year before I finally decided to give locs a
try. When I did get the relaxer chopped out of my hair, I
had about an inch of new growth.
4. Hair Regimen.
I go to my loctitian for color and for very special
occasions. I use Jamaica Mango and Lime loc gel when I
retwist. I wash my hair every 1.5-2 wks. I use shampoo and
conditioner from the natural food store, that has natural
ingredients in it. I use hair clips also when I retwist and
sit under a hair dryer for 60 minutes. I spray my hair with
water with a few drops of rosemary extract mixed in to
moisten my hair, before spraying with almond oil, olive oil
sheen, or using shea butter from chicafrique.biz. They have
great products that smell wonderful.
5. Description of this experience?
It’s been great. At 1st, I felt self conscious, because my
hair was so short. Thought people would confuse me for a
man. The hardest part for me was the 1st 8 mths. or so,
because my hair wouldn’t loc up. And then I had the days
when my hair wouldn’t do what I wanted it to do. Now I just
embrace all the stages of my hair. Each length, each color.
I even relish when it’s not doing what I like, and just tell
myself it’s supposed to be funky.
6. Everybody’s response?
It was really positive. People always compliment my hair.
People ask me where I get it done. People are always curious
as to why I went natural. It’s funny, we never ask why
somebody got a relaxer.
7. Biggest support?
My then boyfriend was my biggest support. He’s the one that
found the loctician to do my hair!! He was great.
8. What have I learned?
I’m more daring now. I love experimenting with my hair. I
find myself feeling sexier and more empowered. Since my hair
is healthier, I find myself wanting the rest of me to be
healthier physically, mentally, and spiritually.
9. What advice for those transitioning?
Be patient. Enjoy every moment. Be proud. Be FIERCE!!!
